Alert Dogs UK: training dogs to save lives

Allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, occur when the body's immune system inappropriately reacts to a harmless substance such as food. For people living with contact or respiratory anaphylaxis, exposure to their allergen can trigger a severe and sometimes life-threatening reaction within minutes.

Our allergen detection dogs are trained to search for and detect allergen odours in the environment. They can scan a room on entering, scrutinize food, purchased items and library books for allergen contamination, and check a friend or visitor and their belongings.

Although sometimes referred to as "peanut dogs", allergen detection dogs can be trained to alert for many other allergen odours including tree nuts, seafood, milk, eggs and soya, even when present in minute quantities.

Dogs are selected for this work based not only on scent skills but also on drive, temperament and obedience, and our mission is to train dogs that are both consistently motivated and accurate in odour detection, as well as meeting the highest standards as assistance dogs. Low-shedding, low-dander breeds such as poodles are often preferred since they may be more allergy friendly.
